And Now, The Nouns

<< First Page

Noun Suffixes

All this time, and we have only covered the basic verb suffixes - all nine categories, and those lengwI'mey rovers. Throughout, I've tried to use the suffixes in sentences that show you how they are used. The examples in The Klingon Dictionary are simple and clear, but ultimately one always needs some examples of usage in order to get a grasp of how the language works.

You have already been made aware that nouns have suffixes, as far back as this lesson. It is now time to look again, more deeply, at the five different kinds of noun suffixes.

Klingon Nouns Have Suffixes, Too

By now, you should be familiar with plural suffixes - -pu', -Du' and -mey; the suffixes -vam this, -vetlh that and -mo' because of, due to at the very least, from their appearances in past pages on this blog.

There are, of course, plenty other suffixes; and this post is just a general overview, before drilling down into the details.

Five Types

A reminder: Klingon nouns take on a maximum of five different types of suffixes. As with Klingon verbs, these suffixes are tacked on to the end of the noun, and each is in a specific order.

NOUN - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5

There are no "rover" noun suffixes; few special rules to follow. Once you know what type a given noun suffix is; where it fits on the end of the noun, in relation to the other suffixes which might appear; that's it. You can use that suffix on any Klingon noun, with few notable exceptions.

Some of these noun suffixes, you have already encountered: their pages can be found here, here, here, here and briefly here. This article is now going to expand on that previous article.

After the lists of suffixes arranged by type, there will be a list of the noun suffixes arranged in alphabetical order. Each suffix will have a link to the page where it appears as the subject.
