By The Numbers 3: Thousands

We last looked at the numbers, and the tens number-forming elements maH tens and vatlh hundreds. Now let's look at the nunber-forming element for the thousands.

SaD, SanID thousand

Like maH tens and vatlh hundreds, SaD thousand is used in numbers. Unlike the first two, there are actually two number-forming elements for thousands:- SaD and SanID. Both can be used interchangeably.

Here are the thousands numbers, from 1,000 to 9,000.

wa'SaD1,000
cha'SaD2,000
wejSaD3,000
loSSaD4,000
vaghSaD5,000
javSaD6,000
SochSaD7,000
chorghSaD8,000
HutSaD9,000

These could easily be written as

wa'SanID1,000
cha'SanID2,000
wejSanID3,000
loSSanID4,000
vaghSanID5,000
javSanID6,000
SochSanID7,000

Here are some of the numbers you can form between one thousand and just below ten thousand. The number-forming element for tens of thousands will be the topic of the next lesson.

Haven't I Seen This Before?

loSSaD 4,000 probably triggers recognition in some of you. You've said it often enough, most likely, without even thinking. loSSaD, of course, appears in one of the most famous Klingon proverbs ever uttered:-

qaStaHvIS wa' ram loSSaD Hugh SIjlaH qetbogh loD

Four thousand throats may be cut
in one night by a running man
