"Your" and Beings Able To Use Language: The Suffix -lI'

<< First Page

-lI' your (beings able to use language)

This suffix is only used to describe beings able to use language, which belong to the one person being spoken to. It would be a grievous insult to use the -lIj suffix on a person, particularly one of higher rank or someone otherwise important. There is a different suffix for someone that belongs to a group of people being spoken to - this will be covered in a later post.

Unlike -wI', there is no confusion when -lI' is used on a verb which has been turned into a noun with the -wI' verb suffix thing which does; doer.

DevwI'leader
DevwI'lI'your leader
vavFather
vavlI'your father
puqloDson
puqloDlI'your son
puqpu'children
puqpu'lI'your children

Examples of usage:-

valbej DevwI'lI'Your leader is certainly smart
mura'DI' joHwI' vIlobnIS; Dura'DI' bItlhIbWhen my Lord orders me, I obey; when he commands you, you are insubordinate
qatlh vavlI' DamuSWhy do you hate your father?
