Type 6; Suffixes of Qualification

<< First Page

Klingons are sometimes inaccurate; but they are never approximate. This is something we learned from the Power Klingon tape. How, then, does a Klingon express certainty, uncertainty or personal opinion?

By using the qualification Type 6 verb suffixes.

There are four Type 6 verb suffixes: -ba' obviously; -bej certainty; -chu' clearly, perfectly, and -law' seemingly, apparently, "I suspect that," "I think that." Each expresses a different form of qualification.

-ba' obviously

To express certainty based on personal opinion, e.g. "He is obviously lying," where there might be room for objective doubt, use the Type 6 verb suffix -ba' obviously. -ba' reflects a personal assertion - an opinion, rather than something known for a fact (that requires the suffix -bej instead).

jItlhab'eghmoHba'ta'I obviously freed myself
bItoj'eghba'pu'You obviously fooled yourself.
Soj muj Sopba'taHShe is obviously eating the wrong food.
nepwI' Daba'He is obviously lying/
nepwI' a liar, Da act in the manner of
voqHa''eghqa'ba'She is obviously distrusting herself again.

Qualification suffixes cannot generally be used with imperative commands.

Next: -bej certainty.
