This lesson covers how to ask the questions who and what in a Klingon sentence.
For these questions, you use the following words:-
| 'Iv | who? |
| nuq | what? |
These words can act as third-person pronouns, the same as ghaH and 'oH, chaH and bIH; however, they can also act as third-person verbs, meaning that the questions "Who is X?" and "What is Y?" - where X and Y are pronouns or nouns - can take the form
X 'Iv
Y nuq
| ghaH 'Iv | Who is he? |
| (jup ghaH) | (He is a friend) |
| SoH 'Iv | Who are you? |
| (tera'ngan jIH) | (I am a Terran) |
| Dochvam nuq | What is this? |
| (Dargh 'oH) | (It is tea) |
In sentences featuring a third person subject and/or object, nuq and 'Iv can be used in the place in the question where the answer would come.
| nuq legh be' | What does the woman see? |
| nughoStaH nuq | What is approaching us? |
| nuq qem loDnal | What will the husband bring? |
| nulegh 'Iv | Who sees us? |
| Dargh qem 'Iv | Who will bring the tea? |
| jagh Suv 'Iv | Who is fighting the enemy? / Who will fight the enemy? |
| ghu' nuq | What is the situation? |
In the next lesson, you will learn more about suffixes, beginning with noun suffixes. Once those have been fully covered, the topic will move on to cover verb suffixes.
