qatlh DaSuchta' | Why did you visit him? |
qatlh tlhIngan HIv tera'ngan | Why is the Terran attacking the Klingon? |
qatlh luHoH? | Why are they killing them? |
qatlh Dargh qem | Why is she bringing tea? |
qatlh jagh vIHoH | Why do I kill the enemy? |
The way to answer a why question is, of course, with because something - and the way to say that is with the suffix -mo' attached to the verb.
Here are some examples of answers to the above questions, all using the -mo' suffix.
jup ghaHmo' vISuchta' | I visited him because he is a friend |
tlhIngan muSHa'mo' tera'ngan tlhIngan HIv tera'ngan | The Terran is attacking the Klingon because he likes him |
jagh chaHmo' luHoH | They are killing them because they are enemies |
nobmey latlh ghajbe'mo' Dargh qem | She is bringing tea because she does not have any other presents |
puqpu'wI' buQmo' jagh, jagh vIHoH | I kill the enemy because he threatens my children |
-mo' is a verb suffix, and it means due to or because.
However, and completely by coincidence, -mo' also appears as a noun suffix, of Type 5, where it means exactly the same thing: due to or because.
tarmo' Hegh tlhIngan | The Klingon died due to poison/ or: The Klingon died of poisoning |
SuSmo' Daqvam wIjaH | We have to leave this place due to the wind |
lay'vetlhmo' qaHIvbe' | I will not attack you, because of that promise |
jaghvetlhmo' maQeH | Because of that enemy, we are furious |
Next lesson: Aspected verbs, part 1 - use of the -ta' suffix.
