Whose X Is This? Part 2
Here are some uses of the questions "Whose X" and "Which X." Again, these sentences are mostly imperative commands telling the person being spoken to to identify or select one option from many: for example, one weapon in an armoury, one glass from a number on a table, or a person in a crowd.
nuHlIj yIwIv | Which is your weapon?/ "Choose your weapon!" |
puqloDlI' yIngu' | Which is your son?/ "Identify your son!" |
jaghlI' yIper | Which is your enemy?/ "Label the enemy!" |
HIqlIj ngaSbogh HIvje' yI'ang | Which is your drink?/ "Show the glass containing your drink!" |
jIHvaD HIqlIj ngaSbogh HIvje' yI'ang | Which is your drink?/ "Show me the glass containing your drink!" |
DarghlIj ngaSbogh bal yIper | Which is your tea?/ "Label the jug containing your tea!" |
nuvpu''e' 'oSbogh ghotvam yIngu' | Whose representative is he?/ "Identify the person whom this one represents!" |
'Iv 'oS ghotvam'e' | Whose representative is this?/ "This person represents whom?" |
'Iv lutlhej nuvpu'vam'e' | Whose people are these?/ "These people accompany whom?" |

Some thoughts:
ReplyDeleteI don't believe the construction "pronoun noun" = "pronoun's noun" is canonical; it's sensible, but I'd advise against using it.
Also, I recommend avoiding referring to people as «Doch»; people are «nuv[pu']», «ghot[pu']», «yoq[pu']», etc.
For example:
'Iv 'oS nuvvam'e'? = "Who does this person represent?"
nuv'e' 'oSbogh nuvvam yIngu'! = "Identify the person that this person represents."
Also, careful with «tlhutlh»; it's a verb. For "drink (noun)", the closest we have is «Soj», which can refer to both food and beverages. However, it may be easier to ask a person to label/identify their HIvje', or their bal.
